DuBose Family

?, #7812
I began this DuBose project because I wanted to find the parents of Elizabeth DuBose (1768-1833), who married Zachariah Norwood.

I found a lot of DuBose’s, but no clear idea of who Elizabeth’s parents were. Some think it was Andrew I, but I have no documentation for that. The main clue I have that this family is somehow related, is that Elizabeth and Zachariah Norwood named a son Theodore Gourdin Norwood. Gourdin was the maiden name of Isaac DuBose II’s wife, Esther. If Elizabeth was the daughter of Andrew I, Esther would be her aunt.

Isaac DuBose and Suzanne Couillendeau

Were Isaac and Suzanne married before or after they immigrated to South Carolina? He was from Dieppe, France, and she from La Tramblade, France, almost 300 miles away. It is more likely they married in South Carolina. “Liste Des Francois et Suisses en Caroline qui souhaittent d'etre naturalizes Anglois” speaks of Suzanne DuBosc, his wife, but this was compiled in 1696, ~10 years later.

Isaac and Suzanne were naturalized c1689.

Andrew I, by 1769, was among the first to move from Berkeley County to Lynches Creek*, which was then in St. David’s Parish, Cheraw District, which eventually became Darlington County. Andrew’s brother, John, and his wife Mary Whilden had moved there by 1750.

From a deed dated 5 Dec 1769, Andrew Dubose, Junr., received land on Lynch's Creek situated on the south side of the creek, bounded on the north by his brother Stephen Dubose, and on the southeast side by his father Andrew Dubose.

* Lynch's Creek ran along the border between new districts Cheraws and Camden created from St. David’s and St. Marks parishes in 1769. In 1785 Darlington became a county within Cheraws District. In 1800, counties became districts, with no overarching districts. This lasted until 1868 when districts became counties.1,2,3,4,5

The following people are mentioned in this DuBose Family story: Elizabeth DuBose, Zachariah Norwood, Theodore G Norwood, Isaac DuBose II, Andrew DuBose, Esther Gourdin, Isaac DuBose I, Suzanne Couillandeau, John DuBose, Mary Whilden, Andrew DuBose II and Stephen DuBose.
